Hey all, Chris here (the artist guy)! So we feel that we should let everyone know what’s going on with the comic currently.
Is it dead? It seems like it, doesn’t it? But no, BiDC is not dead at all, and actually we’re getting right back into the writing process again. There’s simply a lot that has happened behind the scenes that has thrown a pretty big wrench in things, just slowing everything down a LOT. So have you got time for a bit of a read? Good, because I tend to go on for a while when I actually sit down and write.
When we first cooked up this idea, it was over last year’s late spring/early summer. I had gone to Dan and Mikhail wanting to create a new comic focused around a band in the punk rock scene. Both of them were super interested, and we then spent the next few months working on writing, creating the main characters, and concepting. And let me tell you, we put a TON of time and effort into it all, and it’s something that we’re all very proud of.
Initially, what we wanted to be able to pull off was to release the comic the weekend of the Small Press Expo back in September. Well, that didn’t happen. So then we decided to shoot for the weekend of Fest 10. Dan and I had actually stayed up incredibly late one night just trying to get the promo comic done a few days beforehand. That promo page was also the first comic page that was drawn for BiDC. Meaning I had *no buffer* at all in order to keep up with a weekly update schedule, which was something I had said early on that I needed to have if this was going to work. But here we were releasing, and I was scrambling to get artwork and the comic’s website done in time.
It was in no part due to laziness though, if anything, it was from a real lack of time to work on any art. Y’see, I’m a new father (my kid is almost 10 months old) and that alone keeps me pretty busy. I had also started a new job, working totally different hours than I was used to which was leaving me pretty exhausted at the end of the day.
Quite honestly, right before we actually released the comic, all three of us were pretty scarce. Mikhail had moved from Boston to New York and was trying hard to find a stable job, and Dan was getting married the month that we were releasing. So needless to say, we were all incredibly busy. Dan and his wife soon moved out into a different place themselves, so you can imagine the stress and busy-work that came out of that! I can’t speak for exactly how stressed out they were about things they were going through at that time, but I can only imagine.
Put all that together, and it’s almost like it was a perfect storm of doom for our comic. But we all believe that we have worked way too hard on this to just let it drop off. We just have a really cool story we want to share with everyone! Unfortunately Mikhail has had to drop off the project as a writer due to his new job keeping him pretty busy/tired, but he will still very much be around for when we need input or an opinion on stuff.
But anyway, enough of “oh, woe is us.” I just wanted to fill you all in on exactly what was going on with the comic the past couple months. Right now Dan and I are starting back up on the comic, with him getting right back on the writing wagon, and me gearing up to work on the artwork again. I’m going to go ahead and call this a reboot of the comic, with a new website and everything. Also, just so you know, bandindccomic.com now points to this tumblr for the time being until we get things going again. We plan on using this in the meantime to share sketches and previews and just whatever else we want to spout our mouths off about, so there’s that to look forward to!
As time has gone on, taking care of my kid has gotten easier, meaning that I can focus more on working on artwork in my spare time! I’m also going to make double sure that I have some sort of buffer before I post anything again, so it might still be a little bit before we actually do start posting up them comics. But when we do, it will be awesome, I promise. Thank you all for being so patient with us, now let’s make this an awesome new year!
